Seachtain na Gaeilge 🍀

We had a fantastic week celebrating Seachtain na Gaeilge! Ciorcail Comhrá took place throughout the school, with lots of fun, laughter, and great Irish being spoken. Pupils enjoyed working together, building confidence, and using the language in a natural way. A big thank you to everyone who took part – go raibh maith agaibh!💚

Exploring the “World of Gases” – A Science Show to Remember!💨

4th, 5th, and 6th classes were treated to an incredible Science Show, “World of Gases”. Kieran from BOC (A Linde Company) demonstrated contraction, expansion, changes of state of gases, and the fire triangle, including a thrilling liquid nitrogen experiment at -196°C. It was both entertaining and educational, sparking curiosity and imagination among our budding chemists and engineers!

A School Full of Stories 📚✨

From witches and wizards to superheroes, animals and beloved characters, today St. Patrick’s was bursting with imagination for World Book Day! Children across the school celebrated their love of reading through costumes, quizzes, buddy reading, art activities and sharing their favourite stories together. A wonderful reminder that books can take us anywhere!

Science Blast Success! 🏆

5th Class Larch and Elm had a fantastic day at the ESB Science Blast in the RDS. After two months of STEM exploration, investigation and hard work, everything came together brilliantly — and both classes are coming home with Science Blast trophies! We are so proud of their dedication, teamwork and scientific thinking throughout this journey. Well done to all the students in 5th Class, and a big thank you to everyone who came to visit and support their projects last week. What an amazing achievement! 👏

Science Fun Across the School! 🔬✨

This week, 5th Class invited students from across the school to attend in preparation for their big Science Blast next Monday in the RDS! They’ve been working so hard on their projects, and everyone had a fantastic time exploring and learning. Feedback from our visiting classes: Senior Infants Willow were absolutely blown away by the experiments they saw, they felt truly inspired! 1st Class Chestnut loved visiting 5th Class and had a wonderful time learning new science facts. 3rd Class Ash enjoyed discovering creative experiments during Larch’s Science Presentation and asked lots of curious questions. 6th Class Cedar were very impressed by all the science projects on display. 6th Class Laurel loved learning about flight, photosynthesis, and more from 5th Class. A huge thank you to 5th Class for hosting such inspiring sessions, and good luck with the Science Blast next Monday — we can’t wait to see all your amazing projects in the RDS! 🌱🧪🌼🍃✈️🌿🌟🔬

Leaves on the Move: 5th Class Science Blast Preparations Underway 🍃

We had the pleasure of welcoming Alex Dobbs, a local farmer and avid gardener, who gave an engaging and informative talk on photosynthesis and plant composition. As we prepare for Science Blast in two weeks, Alex has very kindly offered her support with our project, “Why Leaves Make Their Great Escape in Autumn.” Fifth Class have thoroughly enjoyed exploring this topic and have been highly motivated while carrying out individual, hands-on experiments using leaves. Their curiosity, enthusiasm, and scientific thinking have been wonderful to see throughout the investigations.

Safer Internet Day – 10th February 💻🌍

At St. Patrick’s NS, children’s safety and wellbeing are at the heart of all we do. Safer Internet Day gave us a wonderful opportunity to shine a spotlight on digital wellbeing across the school. Using our It Takes a Village approach, alongside the TY Digital Passport Programme, our Buddy System and the STEM curriculum, pupils worked collaboratively to learn about, reflect on and raise awareness of strategies for staying safe online. Through age-appropriate books, videos and buddy discussions, children were supported in a safe and inclusive environment where they felt heard, valued and reassured that their safety is always our top priority. Our senior students played a key role in leading the learning throughout the day. Both 6th classes visited Temple Carrig, where they explored the merits and disadvantages of AI, engaging in thoughtful discussion about the opportunities and challenges of this rapidly evolving technology. Once back at school, our 6th class students teamed up with their Junior Infant buddies to share important online safety messages. They created colourful posters about staying safe on the internet and spent time chatting and colouring together, discussing the importance of protecting personal information online. Meanwhile, 5th class organised engaging activities with their Senior Infant buddies, helping them to understand key internet safety messages in a fun, supportive and age-appropriate way. We had great fun playing the Traffic Light Game, using red, yellow and green cards to decide if different online situations were safe, unsafe or unsure. We also tried some role play, acting out scenarios and showing what we would do to stay safe online. It was a fantastic whole-school effort, with children learning from one another and working together to promote a safer online world for everyone.

Bird Feeder Making with 5th Class 🐦

This afternoon we were making bird feeders. We were making them out of willow branches. Some kids brought their bird feeders home and others put them in the school garden. We wet the branches, so they don’t snap and we twisted and decorated them into beautiful bird feeders. Huge thank you to Kelly from Heritage in Schools who showed us how to make them. We enjoyed it so much and now you could make them at home. Keep an eye out for our bird feeders hanging from trees in school! It was a fun, hands-on afternoon and we loved learning a new skill while helping the birds in our area. We are very proud of our creations and can’t wait to see lots of birds visiting them! Irish Dancing Workshops 💚🕺

Children recently enjoyed fantastic Irish dancing workshops, they had great fun learning new steps, practising their rhythm and building their confidence through movement. There was plenty of energy, smiles and toe-tapping throughout the sessions! A huge thank you to Irish Dancing teacher Niamh O’Donnell, for sharing her talent, enthusiasm and love of Irish dance with us. We are so grateful for such an enjoyable experience!   Click on the photos above ⬆️ to see our fantastic dance steps in action! 💃🕺

5th Class Visit Greystones Library

Both 5th classes had the opportunity to visit Greystones Library this week and enjoyed a fantastic experience. We were kindly given a tour of the various parts of the library and shown how to check out books. Some students even became members of the library for the very first time and were delighted to learn that they could borrow a maximum of seven books! It was a lovely visit and a great chance for the children to explore the library and develop a greater interest in reading. 📚

History in the Making 📺

5th Class Larch watched the live inauguration of our 10th President, Catherine Connolly, a momentous occasion we were proud to witness.

Science in action! 🔬✨

Both 5th classes teamed up to investigate the Black Box Experiment, observing carefully, making hypotheses, drawing diagrams, and uncovering how water displacement caused the blue liquid to flow. A brilliant hands-on learning experience!

Snake Jar Success!

Well done to Jack Sweeney, 5th Larch who won our Maths Week competition! Each child had the opportunity to guess how many snakes were in the jar!

4th Class: We love our mummies!

The old teaching mantra applies to almost all aspects of education. I hear, I forget, I see, I remember, I do, I understand. So, what better way to replicate the Egyptians than to make a mummified version of someone! Both 4th classes did just that with amazing results and learning. Better still, they tidied up fully and left no trace for fear that anyone might raid the tomb ! Well done everyone.

4th Class Swimming

4th class have been attending swimming lessons in Shoreline in Greystones over the past number of weeks. The children were assessed and placed in groups in the first week and there has been a huge improvement in their swimming since the start of the lessons. There are definitely a few Olympic swimmers amongst them!

Wildflowers

First Class Larch have been learning all about wildflowers and how to spot them. We went on a nature walk around the school and managed to find daisies, dandelions, fuchsias and even a primrose. We studied them in detail and then had a go at drawing them! Contributor: Rachel Flynn
