Christmas Maths Fun in 5th Class Elm! 🎄
5th Class Elm took part in a Christmas Maths Quiz, and we had great fun working through a range of festive challenges. One of our favourites was the Dingbats Challenge, where we had to solve clever picture puzzles using our reasoning skills. We also practised estimating and making educated guesses. For example, we had to figure out how many Christmas hats were in the jar, and how many buttons the elf pressed in the elevator. Everyone worked brilliantly as a team, and it was a super way to bring some Christmas cheer into our maths lesson!
Teamwork in 5th Class Elm
5th Class Elm have been working in teams on Italian projects, developing their teamwork skills while learning from one another. Fantastic collaboration and creativity on display!
Egg-citing science! 🥚🪂
Senior Infants Willow and 5th Class Elm explored forces and materials, designing parachutes to keep their eggs safe, and learning that the best design is all about function, not flash!
Foam-tastic Science! 🧪💥
5th Class Elm were pleasantly surprised by a science experience from Hannah Markham! 🔬✨ She showed how mixing sodium hydrogen carbonate and acetic acid creates foam, so much fun and a fantastic hands-on demonstration!
Science in action! 🔬✨
Both 5th classes teamed up to investigate the Black Box Experiment, observing carefully, making hypotheses, drawing diagrams, and uncovering how water displacement caused the blue liquid to flow. A brilliant hands-on learning experience!
5th Class Elm: Future Voters Shine!
Today 5th class Elm, Ms Gyo’s class took part in an engaging quiz based on the upcoming presidential election. It was a fun and interactive way for pupils to deepen their understanding of the election process and current affairs.

5th class Elm, Ms Gyo’s class had lots of fun completing Halloween activities. Bobbing for apples, a catwalk, and a would you rather game with Halloween themed questions. We are really excited for Halloween!
Teaming Up for Maths!
5th class Elm-Ms Gyo’s class with their buddies from Senior Infants-Ms Glynn’s class took part in a Maths trail today as part of Maths week. We had lots of fun finding maths all around us and working out various maths questions with our buddies!
Elm Minds in Action!
Maths Week: 5th class Elm took part in a Live Maths Week Quiz. The main aim of the quiz was for pupils to enjoy playful and engaging learning experiences, and see Maths as a fun and accessible subject for all. The focus wasn’t on the correct answer, but it encouraged pupils to share their individual thinking and strategies. We really enjoyed it!
Maths in Motion: 5th Class Elm’s Musical Chairs Challenge
5th class Elm completed a “Musical Chairs” maths activity to kick off maths week. The children each selected an individual 2 digit number on their sheet and when the music stopped they had to go find a new maths sheet and complete the maths task on that person’s page related to their number.
Class Buddies!
5th class Elm got to meet their new buddies for the year ahead , Ms Glynn’s Senior Infants. Having a buddy gives us a chance to be a leader, a friend and a positive influence to the younger children. It was very exciting!!!
5th Class Elm Celebrate the Harvest Season
5th Class Elm have been busy learning all about the Harvest and what it means, a special time to celebrate the gathering of crops and the hard work involved in growing our food. We had a very special contribution from Jamie, who brought in some delicious homegrown grapes and apples from his own garden to share with the class. Jamie even has his own polytunnel, which helps him grow fruit at home, a fantastic example of sustainability and care for the environment. As an extra treat, Jamie also made a homemade apple crumble, using his very own apples. The class loved tasting it, what a delicious way to celebrate the Harvest!
4th Class Hard at Work, Hungry for Knowledge!
4th Class Elm and Larch have had a busy few weeks! In between working hard on their Drumcondra tests, they’ve learned all about Ancient and Modern Egypt. They really got into the Ancient Egyptians’ mindsets by playing the ancient boardgame, ‘Mehen,’ and mummifying each other, and they’re working hard writing their Modern Egypt reports. Elm Class has been using trial and error and a lot of paper mâché to make animal sculptures in art. They are work in progress but we can’t wait to see how they all turn out! Meanwhile, Larch Class have shown off their acting skills by rehearsing and filming poems. They’ve been creative in their costuming and even got to film in front of a greenscreen! Both classes were sad to see Cyntia, our student teacher, leave but they had great fun on the treasure hunt she set up on her last day!
4th Class Elm
4th Class has been learning about Antarctica! In Geography, we researched the continent and made PowerPoint presentations on everything we found out. We had the chance to interview a scientist who has spent three months in Antarctica conducting research on the ground’s surface deep beneath 3km on ice! 4th Class pupils planned their interview questions and heard all about the research bases, daily life and exciting moments that Dr Ockenden experienced in Antarctica. Did you know that there’s an active volcano there?

4th Class Elm acting out some scenes from the Legend of Lady White Snake. This month in History and Geography we have been learning all about China and making some fabulous books full of all of our research!
4th Class: China Themed Art
In 4th Class, we’ve been learning all about China. We’ve been using computers to research modern China and the Ch’in and Han Dynasties to make our very own mini books full of exciting facts! We’ve also had fun doing China-themed art, such as kites, inspired by the traditional fish, bird and dragon designs used in China!
Learning Through Art
‘Schools that integrate arts into their curriculum show improved student performance in maths, English, critical thinking and verbal skills’. Over the past fortnight, students have been displaying their learning through art, to visually communicate their understanding and depth of Key Learning Areas. 4th Class Elm have been busy recreating contemporary art focusing on colour shading, movement and showing emotion
NCH Music Workshops
Over the last month there has been a wonderful sound of music around the school. A huge thanks to the PTA, and in particular Caroline Sweeney, who organised for all classes to enjoy workshops ranging from song writing through singing to percussion.
Searching for the Queen!
Beekeepers and enthusiasts Yvonne and Colm kickstarted some bee workshops for the kids of St Patricks today. Pupils got to learn some interesting facts about bees in Ireland, and even got to taste some of their delicious honey!
Tesselating shapes
3rd Class Elm have been having fun exploring 2D shapes. They made irregular hexagons using lollipop sticks. They also investigated which shapes could tesselate and made some very creative and impressive patterns.
Froggy Firsts
1st Class Elm have been learning about the life cycle of a frog and birds we would see in our garden. They have loved learning about both. They were bird spotters over the weekend and recorded the birds they spotted on a bird tally worksheet. After learning all about frogs, one was found near the pond! We were all very excited to see what we had been learning about in the classroom, in real life. They even examined the frog to see what stage of its life it was at. Contributor: Sam Donohoe
